As I was driving back towards the north shore of Kauai, I could not help but notice this scene. I pulled over and hiked about a block back to capture the panorama. The resulting image I am showing here is over 116 megapixels.
This was my last day in Hawaii on this trip. I had gone up to the Mauna Kea visitor center the day before and was hoping to get up to the summit. Unfortunately, I was unable to secure proper 4x4 transportation. On this final day, I decided to try again.
The weather down in Kona was not great and I figured it was going to be another bad night up on the mountain. When I struck out again with a ride up in a 4x4, I decided to hike up to a nearby hill to an altitude of 9,371'. There were about 15 people up here, and we were surrounded by clouds - could not see the sun. And then it happened...
The sky opened up, and we watched in awe as a layer of clouds rolled in slowly from left to right over the landscape below. It was just a short time later that another cloud surrounded us as the sun dipped under the horizon.
About the rainbow... NO CLUE how it appeared in my final image, but there it is! If someone has a scientific explanation, please comment.
The Secret Falls in Wailua River State Park in Kauai is amazing. I was lucky enough to be at the front of our hiking pack to get down to the base before people jumped in to enjoy the water and take a few shots. This is the same waterfall you may have seen on the show Fantasy Island. To get here, you must kayak about 2 miles up to the trailhead, then another 3/4 mile hike to the falls.
